FUTGAL: Girls' football tournament kicks off at Saikul

Kangpokpi, January 27 2021:
The second edition of FutGal-Girls' football tournament was kicked off on Monday at Saikul bazar playground, at Saikul Hill Town.
The tournament was an initiative of InSIDE-North East and its second edition was organized in collaboration with the Kuki Women Union, Saikul District Sports Association, Saikul and 38 Assam Rifles, Saikul Post as a part of women and girls empowerment through sports in the area.
The opening ceremony was graced by Charubala Haokip, wife of the local MLA Yamthong Haokip as the chief guest while Tingneilhing Doungel, wife of ISL Player Seiminlen Doungel alias Len Kuki and Nemvei Touthang, vice president, KWU Saikul attended as guest of honour and functional president respectively.
Altogether, 20 girls football clubs will vie for the tournament title.
"The perception that women and girls should remain only in kitchen has long gone, we are equally important and deserve due dignity", said Charubala Haokip.
KWU Saikul vice president, Nemvei Touthang said that men are selfish and have been against any attempt by women and girls to rise.
Women and girls must stay strong and be assertive of rights enshrined, she continued.
Hejang Misao, director, InSIDE North East said that the tournament was organised with a strong belief that girls can reach any level that boys can.
Hejang Misao added that the tournament will serve as a platform where girls/women break stereotypes and build their confidence.
The tournament will be conducted in league round format and there will be selection of promising players who will be given further coaching.
The players will be honed in the coaching for participation at the district, State and National level.
