Imphal, November 10 2012: The three-day 3rd State Canoeing & Kayaking Championship 2012 organised by All Manipur Canoeing and Kayaking Association got underway from today at Regional Water Sports Complex, Takmu, Moirang.

The championship was inaugurated by Parliamentary Secretary (YAS & Tourism) M Prithviraj Raj as the chief guest while MLA T Mangibabu Singh and Association president Jyotin Waikhom graced the occasion as the president and guest of honour respectively.

Altogether 67 paddlers from five different clubs namely SYC (Sendra), MPSC, LMYVA (Lalambung), ECHEL (Nagamapal) and Loktak Lake, Moirang are competing for the top honours.

In his speech, Prithviraj stressed on the need to focus more on Olympic events and assured that a sum of Rs 1 lakh would be earmarked for the State Championship from the next financial year.

"The Water Sports Complex constructed at Takmu will be completed and inaugurated soon," he added.
