Imphal, March 12 2025: Indian Army, under Operation Sadbhavana, inaugurated the 1st Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) Football Tournament on Wednesday at Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Bishnupur district.

The event honours Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, the first and only officer from Manipur to be conferred with the Ashok Chakra, India's highest gallantry award during peacetime.

Born on 14 May 1972 in Nambol, Major Laishram Jyotin Singh was an alumnus of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

He was commissioned into Army Medical Corps on February 15, 2003 .

While serving on deputation with the Indian medical team at Indian High Commission in Kabul, Afghanistan, on February 26, 2010, he displayed extraordinary courage by confronting a heavily armed terrorist single-handedly, thwarting a suicide attack on the Indian High Commission premises.

His courageous act forced the terrorist to detonate his explosive vest, leading to Major Singh's supreme sacrifice while saving Six others.

In recognition of his unparalleled bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra on January 26, 2011, according to a press release from PRO & spokesperson, Ministry of Defence, Manipur, Nagaland & Southern Arunachal Pradesh.

In the opening match, Southern Sporting Club (Singjamei, Imphal) registered a narrow 1-0 win over ASUFI (Mao).

The inaugural event was attended by representatives of District Football Association, senior Army officials, and family members of the late Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, Ashok Chakra (P).

Eight teams are competing in the tournament.
