The Maj Bob Khathing Football Tournament kicked off on Friday at Astro Turf Ground, Senapati, featuring 16 teams.
The tournament is organised by the Red Shield Division of the Indian Army in collaboration with the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by a senior Indian Army officer from the 59 Mountain Brigade, Sen apati, as the chief guest.
The event was attended by various personnel from the Red Shield Division, Indian Army, officials from the Senapati District Olympic Association, Manipur, and the District Sports Association, Senapati.
In his address, the senior Indian Army officer highlighted the illustrious career of Maj Bob Khathing, emphasising his significant contributions to India's history.
Born in 1912 in Ukhrul, Maj Khathing served in the British Indian Army, achieving the rank of local captain in Victor Force.
His valorous actions against the Japanese in Burma earned him accolades including the Military Cross and Member of the Order of the British Empire.
Post-independence, he joined the Assam Rifles and played a pivotal role in Tawang's historic moments.
Recognised with a Padma Shri in 1957 for his contributions to the Northeast, he later served as India's Ambassador to Burma from 1972-75.The officer conveyed Maj Khathing's life as a testament to perseverance and determination, emphasising that challenges should never deter one from achieving greatness.
He encouraged all participants to play with integrity, fostering camaraderie and mutual learning beyond mere victory.
A Karang, president District Sports Association, Senapati, expressed deep honour in hosting the Maj Bob Khathing Memorial Football Tournament 2024-25 at Astro Turf Football Ground, Senapati.
The tournament stands as a tribute to Maj Ralengnao Khathing, celebrated for his indelible contributions to the nation.
The president extended gratitude to the Red Shield Division for spearheading the prestigious tournament, foreseeing substantial benefits for the district's young football enthusiasts.
Over the next five days, the tournament promises exciting matches.
Beyond competition, it serves as a celebration of unity through sports, honouring cherished memories.
The opening match featured Zalengam FC versus David Memorial FC, with the tournament set to culminate on January 15, 2025 .
