State Games: IW, IE dominate Day 1 of athletics, Bpr shine in weightlifting, double delight for IW in fencing

Imphal, August 27 2022: Imphal West and Imphal East dominated the first day of the athletics competition of the Manipur Olympic Games at the Khuman lampak Main Stadium on Saturday.

Imphal West won five gold, two silver and two bronze medals on Day 1 .

The IW team's gold medallists were Elabanta (men's 100m), Yaisana (women's 100m), A Sai Chanu (women's 5000m), I Anil (men's 400m), and H Indubala Devi (women's shot put) .

Their silver medals came courtesy of T Rusia (women's 5000m) and H Shital-jit Singh (men's shot put) while A Surbala (women's long jump) and L Velinda (women's 800m) settled for bronze medals.

On the other hand, Imphal East claimed 10 medals including three gold.

S Arnold was fastest in the men's 800m race to claim the top podium honours and H Bhumeshwori bagged the gold medal in the women's 800m race while A Anjita won the women's long jump event for the Imphal East side.

The IE team also secured six silver medals courtesy of Ng Chingulembi (women's 800m), S Samungouba (men's 500m), K Romeshchandra (men's long jump), I Roma (women's shot put), Dawad (men's 100m) and A Anjita (women's 100m), while K Somorjit Singh bagged the bronze in the men's 5000n race.

WEIGHTLIFTING: Bishnupur's L Chinglenmani Meitei men's 61kg), Imphal East's Y Yaiphaba Singh (men's 67kg), Bishnupur's Y Surchandra Singh (73kg), Thoubal's Kh Roshibina Devi (women's 49kg), Bishnupur's L Nilam Devi (women's 55kg) and Imphal West's N Tomchou Singh (men's 55kg) won gold medals in their respective categories.

FENCING: Imphal West bagged gold medals in both men's individual epee and sabre events after N Sandhirai (epee) and Y Givson (sabre) shone in their respective final matches.

TABLE TENNIS: Imphal East beat Imphal West to win the women's team event title.

The Imphal East team comprised S Thajamanbi, Rk Chelsea, Th Binita, W Prity and H Liya Chanu.

Thoubal team com pleted the top three.

BADMINTON: Bishnupur and Imphal West will meet in the mixed team final.

Bishnupur eased past Kakching 3-0 in their semifinal contest and Imphal West too strolled to a 3-0 win over their Imphal East opponents in the other semifinal clash.

MEN'S HOCKEY: Imphal East inflicted a heavy 8-0 defeat on Jiribam while Bishnupur cruised past Imphal West 8-2 in another one-side match on Saturday.

EQUESTRIAN: Thoudam Tanna Devi of Imphal East emerged as the top finisher in the women's tent pegging event as her fellow Khungdongbam Deventy Devi secured the silver medal and Imphal West's I Sangita Devi took the bronze medal.

HANDBALL: Imphal East thumped Jiribam 24-7, Thoubal romped past Bishnupur 27-10, and Imphal West outplayed Imphal East 30-22 in the men's event, while Imphal East recorded three-wins after beating Thoubal, Jiribam and Bishnupur in the day's women event.

Also in other women's matches, Imphal West defeated both Chandel and Thoubal.
