Singjamei wrest Governor's Cup

Imphal, March 20 2012:
Singjamei Polo Club clinched the champions trophy of the 22nd Governor's Cup Invitation Polo Tournament after overcoming a spirited challenge from Manipur Police Sports Club B .
In the summit clash of the polo tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest polo ground in the world today, Singjamei outlasted the police side 5-4 .
For the champions, M Doren struck twice as S Sadananda and P Ojit contributed one apiece.
Abung Khuman and T Pradipkumar scored one goal each before S Abungcha notched two for
the police side.

Governor Gurbachan Jagat presented a rolling trophy and cash prize of Rs 15,000 while the runners-up team was given Rs 10,000 and a rolling trophy.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Governor Gurbachan remarked that the game polo or Sagolkangjei is one of the assets which identified Manipur and its people to the people living in India and abroad.
The game of police has a great potential of acting as a catalyst in encouraging sports tourism in the State and it can become a big attraction for tourists coming to Manipur, thereby boosting the economy of the State, Gurbachan said in his short speech.
