SU beat NESU 1-0 as 63rd CC Meet kicks off

Imphal, February 07 2022: Sagolband United (SU) sealed a narrow 1-0 win over North Eastern Sporting Union (NESU), Khurai as the 63rd edition of the Sir Churachand Singh KCSI, CBE Memorial Football Tournament 2021-22 kicked off today at Artificial Turf, Lamlong Thongkhong.

This year's edition will see 34 teams clubbed into 8 groups vie for top two places in the group stage to progress into the quarterfinals.

Although the opening match (Group A) was settled by a goal, it was overall a neck and neck competition with the two sides sharing a fair share of possession and scoring chances in both the halves.

The Sagolband outfit had the upper hand early on with Jerry Onesemas Pulamte finding the breakthrough goal in the 8th minute of the match but NESU put up a brave fight to pull level.

NESU, who were relentless in their attempts to equalise the margin, had their closest chances when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 52nd minute off a handball in the penalty area of SU but Mathanmingshel who stepped up for the shot misfired.

SU emerged the luckier side as they held onto their slender lead till the final whistle and walked home with all the three points.

KSC, Kangpokpi will face NISA, Thangmeiband in the next Group A league match tomorrow at 10 am before DM RAO meet ASSA (Group B) at 12.15 pm and Classic FA meet AMOFA at 2.15 pm (Group B) .
