The Wheelchair Basketball Association (WBAM) has urged all concerned to respect the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016 (RPwD Act, 2016) and encourage para sports in the State.
WBAM in a press release expressed concern over the diminishing paralympic movement in the State when the other parts of the Nation have shown tremendous growth.
Everyone felt proud when persons with disabilities bring home medals from international paralympic events.
Even the Prime Minister, Minister concerned joined in praising them and accorded felicitation the athletes deserve.
The same was also witnessed in the State when local players achieved big in the national events, it said.
However, the State is yet to see a sporting arena or ground for persons with disabilities where they can practise and prepare for any National or international event, it said.
Para athletes in the State also lack proper coaching facilities apart from financial issues they face every now and then, it said.
Maintaining that persons with disabilities are also a part of the society and they will continue to exist, WBAM drew the attention of all authorities concerned to consider the hardships of the para athletes and fully ensure the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2016 (RPwD Act, 2016) .
WBAM also appealed to the Government to study and discuss the matter on the floor of the Assembly and do the needful to encourage local para athletes in the long run and help them shine in the National and international arenas.
