Imphal, February 28 2016:
Members of the Primary Teachers'
Association today staged a protest demonstration outside the
Education (S) Department office at Lamphelpat demanding the
State Government to extend their contract periods and also
regularise their services.
Speaking to reporters, S Arun, spokesperson of the as-
sociation said that posts to primary school teachers were
appointed on contract basis between 1996 and 1999.
In 2001 when the State was under the President's Rule,
the contract period was extended till 2010.Governor in
Council (GIC) had even taken up verification process in
order to extend their contract periods and regularise their
services, he added.
However in 2010, the contract was terminated resulting
great economic setback to the contract teachers.
In other
Government Departments, 288 employees' services have been
regularised while none of the contract primary teachers' serv-
ice has been taken into consideration, he asserted.
The State Government should consider the plight of the
teachers and fulfil the demands by end of March or else the
association would launch intense forms of agitation.
