Imphal, November 23 2012: The department of Life Sciences, Manipur University hailed the appointment of Prof Vishwanath, a senior faculty member of the department, as Regional Co-Chair of the International Union of Conservation of Nature's Freshwater Fish Specialist Group (IUCN-FFSG) for Southern Asian region for the quadrennium 2013-16 .

In a statement, the HoD of Life Sciences dept, MU, GKN Chhetry said Prof Vishwanath, along with his team of researchers, has been actively working on the freshwater fish biodiversity exploration of the Eastern Himalaya region since 1986 and discovered 60 species of fishes new to science from NE India so far.

Also he has participated in the assessment and evaluation of more than 100 fish species of the eastern Himalaya for IUCN red listing.
