Arms licenses suspended in Imphal East

In view of the possible misuse of licensed arms by display or actual use thereof, during campaigning for the ensuing 5th Panchayat Elections 2017, District Magistrate of Imphal East has suspended all arms licenses issued in respect of persons ordinarily residing in Imphal East district with immediate effect and until expiry of one week after declaration of results of the elections.
The District Magistrate in an order issued today also directed all license holders in the district to surrender the licensed arms/ammunition to the nearest police station or to the police station having jurisdiction over the area in the recorded address, as the case may be, as required under sub-section 10 of Section 17 of Arms Act, 1959 .
According to the order, the competent authority of all police stations concerned are further directed to issue police summons to the licensees possessing licensed arms for enforcing the deposit of licensed arms .
Officer-in-Charge of police station concerned shall issue proper receipt against deposit of arms to the license holder concerned and shall also make fool proof arrangements for keeping the deposited arms in safe custody.
The licensed arms so deposited shall be returned to the licensees immediately on expiry of one week after the declaration of results of the elections, the order said.
