Imphal, July 02 2014:
A drive to declog the Naga rivulet in the form of removing grasses and shrubs kick-started today at Laipham Khunou.
The drive is being undertaken by volunteers of local clubs at the initiative of Pangeijam Saratchandra, Principal of Enlightened Knowledge Higher Secondary School, Sangakpham.
Saratchandra said that the drive was aimed at doing away with the chronic problem of flooding of paddy fields, dwelling houses and residential areas due to overgrowth of shrubs, herbs and grasses along the course of Naga rivulet.
Due to clogging of the rivulet, several hectares of paddy fields located in Achanbigei, Khabam, Kairang, Ahallup and Laipham Khunou are flooded every year.
The declogging drive is being carried out by local club volunteers using excavators, Saratchandra said.
