Protection of child rights discussed

Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR) discussed issues of Child Rights Protection in Manipur on Monday at Manipur Press Club here.
In a statement issued by the convenor of MACR, Montu Ahanthem stated that there are 84 cases of sexual assaults o children (based on June 19 reports) in which the Social Welfare Department is showing helpless to deal with them.
The District Child Protection Unit has failed to continue with its activities as the employees have not got their pays for four-five months, he said.
He also stated that the MACR has been functioning without the chairman for the past three-four months.
The statement further added that there are case reports from Churachandpur where five young girls aged between 13 and 15 years old were sexually abused by accused Timothy L Chalshang who was the administrator of North- East Children Home & Academy.
The accused was released on May 27 on medical ground.
He further appealed to the Government to look into the issues on protection of child rights and take necessary action to appoint a chairman for MACR during the ongoing assembly.
