Imphal, June 01 2013 : Today, a number of progressive and democratic organiza- tions including NEFIS, JNUSU, MSAD, KYS CSW, TKLD etc held a protest demonstration outside the Malviya Nagar Police station demanding that an FIR be lodged regarding the death of Reingamphi Awungshi and proper investigation be initiated.

Only after a day-long protest demonstration did police agree to start the standard procedures and also agreed to transfer this case to the Crime Branch.

The North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) finds it extremely contemptible that it requires a protest demonstration for police to start standard procedures.

This reflects the careless and insensitive attitude of Delhi Police.

"We resolve to follow the proceedings of this case closely and protest again if we feel that the police is not doing its job properly", said a press release issued by NEFIS.

It also called upon all progressive and democratic forces to initiate a campaign to assure safety of women, particularly single students and working women who stay alone.
