Imphal, October 13 2012: With about 80 percent of paddy plantation area affected by rodent and termite menaces people of Tousem sub-division are enduring severe hardships and staring at possible large scale starvation this year, said Development Committee tousem Block, Tamei AC.

A release of the Committee issued today highlighted that apart from rodents and termites destroying paddy fields, flash floods had washed away many plantation areas consequently resulting in the farmers managing to harvest only about 50-60 tins of paddy compared to 50-100 tins in the past.

To ameliorate the farmers' condition, the Committee appealed to the departments of agriculture and horticulture of Government of Manipur to extend assistance in the form of provision of winter crop seeds such as potato, tomato, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, pea, beans, onion, garlic, etc at the earlier possible.
