End in sight to nurses' strike

The ongoing strike by the JN Hospital Nurses Association demanding, among others, adequate supply of bio-safety measures and emergency medicines may be called off within this week.
The director, health department, Dr Chandramani Singh, said the nurses' strike and the demands raised by them will be taken up in a meeting-of the Governor's council tomorrow at Raj Bhavan.
In the meantime, he also appealed to the superintendent of JN hospital to open up more wards in the hospital other than casualty in the interest of the general public.
He said the authorities understood the situation faced by the nurses, but due to the financial crunch of the state the department has failed to implement their demands.
He revealed that the department owed a total of Rs 3 crores to suppliers and pharmacies which have supplied medicines on credit.
Apart from this, the department also owed Rs 33 lakhs for obtaining patient's food, Rs 65 lakhs to the electricity department, Rs 1 lakh in water supply bills and Rs 1.5 lakhs in telephone bills.

Women employees of various employees of the state government submitted a memorandum to the state chief secretary today declaring they would eschew all festivities, including Ningol Chakouba, until the demands raised by the JAC (AMGEO and AMTUC) are fulfilled.
Around 500 women employees gathered at the Raj Bhavan gale this afternoon to submit their memorandum to the Governor, but in his absence handed it over to the chief secretary of the state.
This followed a meeting of the women employees at the JAC office at Babupara today, where it was resolved to eschew all festivities and continue the strike indefinitely until the demands are fulfilled.

A training programme on 'Building Construction' will be organized by the Cost Effective Building Technology Centre (CEBTEC), Manipur.
Interested persons have been asked to contact the CEBTEC, Manipur office at Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai, Imphal.
The centre will help the people construct low cost buildings and encourage aforestation in the State, a statement said.

Narcotics sleuths of the Imphal West district police nabbed four drug peddlers and seized 100 gms of heroin powder from their possession at Nagamapal at 9.15 am today.
The drug peddlers are identified as Vipul Purakastha (48) of Assam's Golaghat Chowk Bazar presently staying at North AOC, Arubam Iboton (36) of Awang Wabgai, Chongtham Shamungou (52) of Sagoltongba Mayai Leikai and MK Kamgin Kuki (38) of Motbung bazar.
The seized heroin powder is worth around Rs one lakh.

One investigation officer who is enquiring into the June 18 firing near Raj Bhavan and another person injured in the firing gave their statements before the Upendra Commission today.
The Commission will record statements of Director Fire Service, a magistrate and two injured persons tomorrow.
With their statements, recording of witnesses from the public side will conclude, a reliable source said.

Ex-Territorial Council member Akim Angnal has expired at her North AOC residence at around 8 am today.
She was 89.Angnal was also the founder mother of Kanglatongbi Children Home, vice chairman of State Welfare Advisory Board, founder of Manipur Baptist Convention and Women Society.
Funeral services of the deceased will be performed at Kanglatongbi Children Home at 11 am tomorrow.
Ex-MP BD Behring has condoled her demise.
