Imphal, October 29 2015:
As part of its sustained campaign against drugs and alcohol, Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) in collaboration with Nongpok Leingak Apunba Lup and Chongabi Chaokhat Khongthang Meira Paibi Lup organised a discussion programme titled 'Sarkarna licence piraga yoo sunghanba yaroi' yesterday at Kongba Uchekon Chongabi Mandop, Imphal East.
Dipanjit Ningthoujam, secretary general, CADA, Yumlembam Mema, president NLANL and Th Ibetombi, secretary, CKMPL attended the programme as presidium members.
Geetchandra Mangang, secretary finance, CADA, Th Manihar, adviser, MAPI Council and Th Radhamani, secretary, NLANL were the resource persons, according to a statement.
Speakers of the programme observed that tons of superfine rice have been imported in the State to make up annual food (home grown grains) insufficiency.
Large quantity of home grown rice will be wasted if the Govt's move to legalise alcohol trade is realised as huge quantity would be used in brewing liquor for export and local consumption.
As a result, people are bound to starve due to want of food grains.
Drug abuse and alcoholism have significant impact on society even when there is prohibition on liquor trade and consumption, they noted.
What would be the consequence be if this prohibition is lifted, the speakers asked.
As such, the speakers raised strong objection to the move to legalise liquor trade by the State Govt.
