Imphal, March 29 2012:
A one-day national seminar on 'Material Sciences & Astrophysics' organised by the department of Physics, Manipur University was held today at the Senate Hall of
the varsity.
attending the valedictory programme of the seminar, MU Vice chancellor Prof HNK Sharma conveyed to the gathering that he will contribute his mite in setting up a department of astrophysics in the University.
stating that 'where we come from, where are we now and where are we going to end' are some of the fundamental questions that could be answered only through vigorous study and knowledge on astrophysics, while responding to a query from a seminar delegate, Prof Sharma said apart from his personal interest on the subject the need of the hour is acquiring in-depth knowledge on astrophysics.
Hours after returning to the State from attending an international seminar abroad, the VC informed that scientists he interacted with at Geneva-based CERN (Centre for European Research Network) were requested/invited to deliver talks on astrophysics here to motivate MU students/scholars.
Considered to be the world's largest ever scientific experimental centre, it is informed that thousands of scientists are working on 'large hadron collidor' (LHC), experimenting the origin of universe by creating a miniature million-dollar 'big-bang' .
Earlier in the day, Prof PK Mukhopadhyay of SN Bose Institute deliberated on the topic 'Introduction to the fascinating world of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys a series of smart materials', Prof N Nimai Singh of Gauhati University on 'Matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe: Barygenesis to Leptogenesis', Prof HP Singh of Delhi University on 'Fingerprinting Stars', Prof HL Duorah of Gauhati University on 'Star systems and cosmology' and Prof A Srinivasan of IIT Guwahati on 'Magneto-calorie effect in Heusler alloys' .
