Imphal, September 27 2022:
Hill Areas Committee (HAC) Chairman Dinganglung Gangmei has emphasised on the need to rectify wrongful recognition of some tribal communities in Manipur.
He made the statement during a function held at the office of Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) at Chingmeirong, today.
Addressing the function as chief guest, Dinganglung Gangmei said that one of the tribal communities whose identity is being recognised incorrectly is Chakhesang in Jessami.
Saying that Chakhesang is considered as an Angami by a large chunk of people here but there is distinction in the characters of the two tribes, the HAC Chairman said it is the responsibility of Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) to study the anomaly of Chakhesang and Angami tribes and send the finding to the authority concerned for correction.
Further stating that every community big or small has the right to preserve its identity, culture and tradition, Dinganglung Gangmei urged the MSCST to extend support to Chakhesang tribe in preserving their identity.
He said that MSCST which was inactive for years has started working credibly in hill districts of Manipur.
Dinganglung Gangmei also released the annual report of MSCST for the year 2021-2022 and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to develop North East India.
MSCST Chairperson Thuigai Mathieu Rongmei and Tamenglong AC MLA Janghemlung Panmei also attended the programme.
