Workshop on MGNREGA begins

A two-day block level awareness programme on Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act for the village level workers of Imphal West-I community development block has commenced from today at Kuki Inn, here.
Inaugural function of the workshop, organised by Regional Directorate of Central Board for Workers Education under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, was held with Imphal West Zilla Parishad Upa adhyakshya Ch Bijenty Devi, Regional Director of the workshop host W Iboyaima Singh and Mayang Langjing ZP Member T Manitombi Devi as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
In her address, Ch Bijenty conceded that inspite of many unemployed youths reaping benefits since implementation of development works under the MGNREGA a number of complaints had been received with regard to disputes over alleged non-pay of wages.
Even though all the aggrieved parties could exercise their right by invoking Right to information Act it would be in the right earnest if outstanding differences are settled out of court in order to ensure that the welfare programmes are implemented expeditiously, suggested the chief guest while claiming that not a single worker engaged under MGNREGA scheme works for the prescribed period of 100 days.
Reminding all concerned that various welfare schemes had been implemented throughout the State in the past few years, Bijenty further observed that frequent disruption caused to the scheme works through filing of petitions under RTI might constraint the Central Government to cease fund provision.
Speaking at the occasion, functional president W iboyaima conveyed that the two-day workshop is being organised under the objectives of not only assessing gains from the Central sponsored schemes but also to enable the beneficiaries have detailed knownledge on every aspect of the schemes.
The opening day had deliberations on 'Role of Gram Sabha/Panchayat in MGNREGA' by Manipur state Zilla Parishad's Junior Consultant M Sohodeva and 'Issues involved in the implementation of MGNREGA' by SIRD Faculty Dr Th Mitrajit.
