Social Welfare department conducts COVID-19 test for street based drug users

Department of Social Welfare conducted a mass testing of COVID-19 for street based drug users on May 24 at the premises of the Directorate of Social Welfare near 2nd MR Gate.
A target of 50 number of drug users was set but only 29 male drug users and 4 women drugs users were tested.
The people affected by Substance use disorders are among one of the most vulnerable section of the society to both COVID-19 as well as the adverse impact of stringent measures take up to control the pandemic, said a statement issued by Social Welfare Department.
Those suffering from alcohol or drug use disorders are likely to experience intense craving as well as withdrawal symptoms with potential serious and life threatening consequences and they may become a potential source of the spread of the virus, added the statement.

With this in view, the mass testing of street based drug users was conducted with association with FINGODAP-Manipur Chapter and Drug Users' Federation for Human Rights and Justice.
The RTPCR report of all those tested has come back negative except for one drug user.
The 28 male drug users who tested negative has been taken to Divine Light Centre, Canchipur and the 4 female drug users have been take to Sneha Bhavan, Airport road for treatment.
The positive person has been transferred to a special unit of Covid Care centre for treatment and once he become negative, he will be transferred to a special de-addiction treatment centre at Canchipur.
