A meeting of women organisations held today at Nagaram community hall in the aftermath of an elderly woman hailing from K Somrei being raped by one md Sanayai has resolved to demand speedy trial of all pending cases of crime against women and complete legal proceedings within three months.
The other decisions adopted at the meeting include effective measures to ensure safety of the womenfolk, most stringent form of punishment against the perpetrators, adequate compensation to the victims, submit memoranda to the Chief Minister, Home Minister and DGP regarding the meeting resolutions and organise protest demonstrations/rallies when the assembly session is underway.
Describing rape of the elderly woman as a sign of growing malaise and morale degeneration of the society, Rongmei Lu-Phuam president Panti Golmei regretted that the female members of the society have been continuously enduring severe atrocities.
Urging the victims as well as NGOs working for upliftment of women's rights to properly preserve material evidences so that criminals face the consequences, she cautioned that any sort of naivety might weaken the case and allow the guilty ones escape befitting punishment.
Among others today's meeting was attended by Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur president L Memchoubi, MBC Centre Church general secretary W Konghar, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Organisation president Y kunjarani, Naga Women's union president Aram Pamei, All Manipur Muslim Women Development Organisation president Sitara Begum, Women Action for Development secretary M Sobita and Tangkhul Shanaolong president SC Ringleiwon.
