A girl from Churachandpur who has a rare case of degenerative visual impairment and gradually lost sight with the completion of her graduation has cracked the IBPS PO exam landing her a job with the Central Bank of India, sources said.
Mercy Manhoihlun, daughter of T Hanga Guite and Shanti Guite of Mualkawi village in Churachandpur was very fortunate to have parents who did not discriminate nor pamper her over her other siblings.
They believed in her and gave her all the support she needed despite gradually losing her sight after graduating in Psychology from Delhi University in 2017, according to a congratulatory note issued by The Malsawm Initiative - a school for people with special needs.
Mercy had joined the Malsawm Initiative following her graduation and learned Braille within 8 months besides acquiring the art of basic typing.
Thereafter she went on to earn a Diploma in Access Technology from National Association for the Blind, New Delhi.
She then secured a job as a helpdesk counsellor with Saksham Trust, an organisation working for visual impairment in 2019 and worked there till date.
Her feat in cracking the bank PO exam that eventually assigned her to the Central Bank of India was announced on May 20 amidst the global pandemic and Nationwide lockdown.
Lauding her success, TMI said, 'we are very proud of her and feel fortunate to have been a part of her learning process.
We wish her a successful career and that she will continue to inspire those around her.
'Challenge yourself with a zeal to do.
Don't let your disability be the barrier or excuse to not achieve what you want to do,' she is quoted as having said by the institute.
