Sharmila slams BJP led Govt

Palakkad, March 21 2017: India's most revered rights activist, Irom Sharmila, from Manipur, who is currently spending a quiet vacation in Kerala, expressed her apprehension about the new Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the state of North East India.

In an interview to Onmanorama, Sharmila had some 'strong' words against the current BJP dispensation in Manipur.

She said she had no hopes about the BJP-led Government which came to power in Manipur for the first time after it formed a coalition Government in the State recently.

She alleged that former top cop of Manipur, Joykumar, who is the current Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur, was involved in fake encounters.

"Manipur's ex-DGP is holding power after being elected by the people.

He was involved in the killings of 1,528 people in fake encounters in Manipur.

It's horrendous.

Horrible will be the outcome of this new Government" .

Sharmila, who broke her 16-year-old hunger strike against the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act last year, contested Manipur Assembly elections.

She managed to garner only 90 votes as a candidate of the Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance.

Sharmila formed Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance after breaking her fast last year.

The PRJA fought elections from three constituencies in the 60-member Manipur assembly.

The party failed to win a single seat.

Currently, she is staying in Santhi Medical Information Center at Attappady, Palakkad.

As Sharmila is very popular among the residents of Kerala, a steady flow of visitors to the Centre is keeping her busy.

On Monday, Sharmila met Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the latter's office in Thiruvananthapuram.
