Bishnupur, July 20 2022:
Urging the government to repair the low and high canals of Moirang and Loktak Lift Irrigation (LLI) project and distribute sufficient urea to Bishnupur farmers, Moirang Kendra Farmers Development Cooperative Society has cautioned of launching an intense agitation with the support of other farmer organisations of the district from July 25 if the demands are not honoured by July 24 .
Speaking in connection with the resolutions adopted during a public meeting organised by the Society at Moirang Lamkhai on Wednesday, Society's vice president N Jadumani informed that though some amount of urea has been distributed by the local MLAs, it is still not adequate to meet the requirement of the farmers.
On the other hand, there is drought like situation in farmlands as the rains have stopped.
The government had assured many times that Moirang as well as Imphal low and high canals of LLI project will be made functional.
In May, the water resources minister and department officials had even inspected the canals and assured that supply of water through the Moirang low canal in twothree days' time, but till now the canal has not been fully repaired at many places, he lamented.
While wondering whether the ministers and MLAs have become puppets of engineers or they are intentionally ignoring the plight of the farmers, he also contended that there are reports of Imphal low canal supplying irrigation water from time to
time, but the Moirang low canal since its construction has seen not one drop of water.
Therefore, considering the problems faced by the farmers, the government must supply irrigation water to them by July 24, otherwise from July 25 onwards, the Society along with other farmer bodies of Kumbi, Thanga and Moirang assembly constituencies will resort to various forms of protest, he further cautioned. The public meeting was also attended by Moirang Kendra Farmers' Development Cooperative Society office bearers, Kumbi Haotak Loukol Society chairman Kh Samushaba, Kumbi Kendra Farmers' Progressive Association president S Dinesh, Moirang Kendra Apunba Loumee Sinmee Lup and Nupi Lup secretary L Manglem and members of other farmer bodies.
