73rd Zomi Nam Ni observed at New Lamka complex

CCpur, February 20 2021: The Zomi Council and the representatives of its constituent units observed the 73rd Zomi Nam Ni at New Lamka complex today.

The programme was attended by John K Ngaihte, Chairman ZC and TA & Hills Minister, Vungzagin Valte.

The Nam Ni celebration has been largely scaled down due to the pandemic restrictions with only tribe leaders and Zomi workers invited for the event, said a source.

The celebration began with a brief address by the Council chairman and the Minister, and the presidential message was delivered by ZRO's vice president, Kenneth, on behalf of the president.

Based on the theme, 'Onward Zomi Nation' the presidential message stressed on issues concerning the future with the message of steadfastness and perseverance.

Kenneth highlighted the impact of the pandemic on Zomis and stated that despite the many progress made, there is a lot more to do to uplift the Zomi people to a better standard of living, good health and better livelihoods.

He encouraged the youth, who are the future of the Nation, to work hard, to explore possible solutions to the many challenges faced by the people and to excel in any field of their pursuit.

The presidential message also conveyed solidarity with the Zomi in Eastern Zogam, along with the people of Myanmar who have been on the streets fighting for their rights to have a Government of their choice.

'Installation of a full democracy in Myanmar has always been one of our objectives,' read the message written by Thanglianpau, President ZRO.

In the western front, the ZRO/ZRA has been under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Government of India since 2005 .

In 2008, the Tripartite SoO was signed with the Government of India and the Government of Manipur.

After a decade, the Government of India under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appointed an interlocutor and initiated political dialogue in 2017 .
