Imphal, January 19 2014 :
The Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC) has started repairing Makru bridge of Imphal-Jiribam highway since yesterday.
Even as the bridge located between Lungkao and Keiphundai in Tamenglong district was badly worn out, none of the authority came forward to repair it leaving transporters/drivers in a very difficult and risky situation.
With BRO paying no attention to the TDC's appeal to repair the bridge, TDC even decided to stop transportation of all essential commodities from Jiribam to Imphal.
This decision prompted Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar to make a field inspection of the bridge together with TDC president H Ranjit and top officials of PWD.
After inspecting the bridge, the Works Minister assured that the bridge would be repaired very soon in association with TDC.

Subsequent upon the assurance, wooden planks worth around Rs 7 lakh were brought from Imphal and repairing of the 246 feet long bridge was started.
The repairing work is being done with monetary assistance from Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar.
BRO is also assisting the repairing work by giving labour and steel rods.
In addition to 12 labourers hired by TDC, BRO's 20 labourers are also engaged in the repairing work being monitored by PWD officials.
The bridge constructed in 1970 was inaugurated on November 16, 1971 by the then Governor DR Kohli.
For the first time, all the steel frames which support wooden planks of the bridge are being replaced.
Repairing work of the bridge would be completed by around 50 per cent this evening.
To complete the repairing work as fast as possible, labourers hired by TDC are working at night too.
It is estimated that the repairing work being monitored by SE (National Highway Circle) N Noren and EE Tamenglong P Birkumar would be fully completed by January 20 .
