Imphal, May 18 2020:
In view of the hordes of stranded Manipuri natives coming back to the State, the State Government has decided to test 1000 to 1500 samples in a day for COVID-19 .
Chief Secretary Dr J Suresh Babu held a meeting with officials of Health Department today and the meeting decided to enhance the State's COVID-19 testing capacity.
As discussed at the meeting, the equipment installed at JNIMS and RIMS can test five samples each at one go.
Their capacity would be augmented to 25 samples each at one go so that 1000 to 15000 samples can be tested in a day, informed a source.
The meeting also decided to raise the number of teams engaged in collecting and testing samples for COVID-19 .
Of the people returning to the State by train and bus, those who came from red zones are tested first and they are quarantined away from other returnees.
Officials of Health Department and experts of JNIMS and RIMS have even discussed about how the last rites or funerals would be performed in case anyone dies of COVID-19 in the State.
It is said that if any one dies of COVID-19, Health Department would hand over the dead body to district administration and the municipality concerned would perform the last rites with only four/five family members.
But family members would not be allowed to touch or carry the dead body, said the source.
