Bishnupur, December 17 2024:
A team led by officials and engineers from the State PWD Department along with Moirangthem Asnikumar Singh, chairman of Loktak Development Authority and community leaders conducted a preliminary feasibility study for a comprehensive proposal aimed at enhancing road connectivity in Thanga constituency.
The initiative which promises to bring much-needed progress and prosperity in the region focuses on improving and widening existing roads while developing new connectivity options including widening, resurfacing and upgrading approach roads to proper tarmac/asphalt standards, connecting Thanga from Sendra and Keibul sides, along with the crucial Moirangkhunou-Keibul stretch and the Keibul-Kaishoi-Sendra road.
Further, roads in and around Thanga Hillock will undergo comprehensive improvements, including construction of retaining walls with geo-textile technology, roadside drainage systems, culverts, bridges and safety barriers to ensure commuter safety.
The total length of the proper road stretch is approximately 32 kilometers.
A significant feature of the proposal is the construction of a new road from Thanga Salam Mangha (Pukhrambam Ching)-Mandha-Chingthi, along with bridges linking Thanga Salam Mangha (Pukhrambam Hill) Mandha-Mukap and Mandha to Chingthi and extending further to Sekmaijin, Imphal West.
This route holds immense historical significance as it was once a vital footpath used by the people of Thanga for trade with Kakching, especially during the winter months when it became accessible.
This proposal will not only restore the route but also re-establish the bonds of trade, culture and kinship that have connected these communities for generations.
Once implemented, the project will provide direct connectivity to Bishnupur, Imphal West, Kakching and Thoubal districts while integrating Thanga with key national highways, including Tidim Road (NH 2), Mayai Lambi (NH 137-A) and National Highway 102/ASEAN Highway.
Addressing the media, M Asnikumar Singh expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, Works Minister, Govindas Konthoujam and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, for their support in considering the proposal and directing the State PWD Department to initiate the survey and prepare the Detailed Project Report.
He also extended heartfelt thanks to the community leaders and the people of Thanga for their unwavering support and active participation in the feasibility study.
