An alleged illegal immigrant from Bangladesh has been found living in Manipur for more than 30 years by impersonating as a local.
This came to light after police arrested the person identified as Md Anwar Hussain (54) following a routine spot verification conducted at Khabeisoi on October 7.It was only on October 16 that Chief Minister N Biren had raised the call 'Identify, root out illegal immigrants' .
Police produced him before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal East today.
The Court remanded him to judicial custody till October 31 .
The 54-year-old Md Anwar Hussain, of Chaudala village, Rajshahi district of Bangladesh was staying at Khabeisoi Mamang Leikai.
As per the submission of the Investigating Officer in the Court, Md Anwar was arrested by a team of Lamlai Police Station on October 7 from Khabeisoi.
While on patrol, the police personnel came across Md Anwar near YOSC playground at Khabeisoi.
On spot verification, he identified himself as Md Anwar Hussain from Bangladesh and disclosed that he entered India at the age of 17 through Malda district of West Bangal in the year 1990 without any valid documents.
And in the same year he came to Manipur as a truck handyman and never returned.
Allegedly impersonating as a local person, he obtained his driving license from DTO Imphal West and also obtained an Aadhaar card from Imphal East.
The Investigating Officer submitted that the accused, Md Anwar was a foreigner and a Bangladeshi and his stay in Manipur is a very big threat to the security of the State.
The IO asserted that Md Anwar has admitted that he is Bangladeshi, born and brought up at Chaudala village, Bangladesh.
The IO said Md Anwar had entered India at the age of 17 through the West Bengal border without proper documents and as such his deportation is highly required.
The accused is an illegal immigrant and he has not disclosed anything about his activities in Bangladesh during the police custody period.
As criminal antecedent of the accused is not known, judicial custody of the accused is required to complete the investigation.
The Court on perusal of the case record and after hearing the IO rejected the bail plea of the accused and remanded him to judicial custody till October 31 .
