Imphal, January 13 2015:
As part of the Asian water bird count, migratory birds found at Loktak and surrounding lakes were counted today.
The bird count was conducted by Wildlife Wing, Forest Department in collaboration with NGOs.
The counting done at 50 vantage points were supervised by Range Officer L Biramangol and Kh Hitler.
According to Biramangol, larger number of birds were sighted during today's bird count which started at 5 am and continued till 1 pm as compared to previous years.
Although the exact figure cannot be given at the moment, there is no doubt the number of birds sighted today is greater than the number of birds sighted in the preceding years, Biramangol said.

This is an indication of the improving environment of Loktak lake, he added.
RK Birjit who is the coordinator of the bird count exercise said that large number of Porom and Tingi birds were sighted but the number of species of migratory birds is lesser compared to previous years.
However, the total number of birds seen today is higher than the number of birds sighted last year.
The point where maximum number of birds were sighted was Thangjing Kom, located to the eastern side of Thinungei.
There more than 15000 birds were sighted.
Nganu Thangong, Porom, Tingi, Thoidingam, Tharoichabi, Kanga etc were among the thousands of migratory birds sighted today.
In the course of the bird count, volunteers of the Unique Wildlife Protection Committee seized nets used for catching wild birds apart setting free a few birds found trapped in the nets.
