Imphal, August 12 2019:
Thangmeiband AC MLA Khumukcham Joykisan has threatened to stay away from the Independence Day celebrations if all the arrested members of the JAC Against the Mysterious Death of Ningthoujam Babysana, Thangmeiband United Club (TUC) and other innocent protesters are not released by August 14.Speaking to media persons today, Joykisan said that all sections of the society are aggrieved by the mysterious death of Babysana and a sustained mass movement has been raging on.
It is a matter of grave concern that the State Government has been acting blind even after the JAC has called bandh twice.
The bandhs called in connection with the mysterious death of Babysana received overwhelming support from the masses and this is a clear indication that the Government's position on the issue is misplaced, Joykisan asserted.
"As an MLA, I have been taking part in the Independence Day celebrations on August 15 every year.
But it must be assumed that the freedom of all those people who have been imprisoned for participating in the mass protest has been curtailed", Joykisan said.
He continued, "It would not be right for me to join the Independence Day celebration when a number of people are being oppressed by imprisoning and not allowing them to express themselves.
The State has been functioning as if emergency is in force" .
If Chief Minister N Biren respects the Indian Constitution and if he intends to celebrate the Indian Independence Day, it is his duty to make all the people of the State happy, said the Congress MLA.
He categorically stated that he would not take part in the Independence Day celebration as an MLA in case the JAC members, TUC members and other protesters who are currently lodged in jail are not released by August 14.If the State Government respects Independence Day, the arrested protesters should be released and they must be given freedom, Joykisan asserted.
Denouncing the Government's position on the mysterious death of Babysana, Joykisan asked if the Government has any reply to the protest demonstration staged by BJP Thangmeiband Mandal including the BJP State unit vice president which demanded establishment of the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Babysana.
Hailing the memorandum submitted by the BJP Thangmeiband Mandal to the State Government which demanded CBI enquiry into the mysterious death of Babysana, the Opposition MLA condemned the alleged act of manhandling of women protesters by male police as if there are no female police personnel in the State.
Neither freedom nor democracy would have any meaning if the Government continues to oppress people/protesters by using brute force, Joykisan added.
