Registered MSMEs in NE : Manipur ranks first with largest number

Imphal, October 10 2019: With the initiation of Manipur Start Up Scheme by the BJP led Government, Manipur now has secured the top spot for having the largest number of registered Micro, Small and Medium businesses in the North East region of the country.

According to an official source, based on the report of the Central Government MSME data and the State Government Business Tax data, Manipur is experiencing a rapid push towards a new business model.

The source informed that the annual report of the Ministry of MSME for the year 2018-19 showed that from 2015 to 2019, a total of 68.25 lakh business registrations were done in the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) for the country.

When it comes to the North East region out of the said total number of business registration of the country, Manipur had around 12,438 business registrations, Tripura had 2317, Assam had 2000, Mizoram had 1003, Meghalaya had 795, Nagaland had 292 and Sikkim had 288 business registrations., the source explained adding that the registration to the UAM by the MSMEs for Manipur was done via on-line.

The source continued that according to the State Government Taxation Department, 16,300 tax returns were filed for businesses from 2015 to 2019 and further informed that from 2017-19, a total of 10,352 businesses were registered.

This new change in the business landscape of the State is mainly due to the introduction of Manipur Start Up by the Chief Minister N Biren led State Government and till date, more than 1000 individuals have been assisted, the source added.

During the first round of the said scheme, around 512 applicants came.

In the second round, 2019 applications were called through on-line but 3966 turned up and this also helped in spreading awareness of the scheme.

In the first round, to ensure the start of 338 businesses, applications were invited for three categories (idea category, ESS category and revenue category) and 512 applications were received.

In the second round of the scheme, the source said that applications were invited for starting 798 businesses but 3966 people applied.
