Imphal, October 10 2016:
Following an assurance of the State Government to repair the highly dilapidated sections of NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) on either side of Makru bridge, transporters have started amassing stones/chips/ boulders at Langjing Achouba truck parking so as to help the highway repairing work.
Many loaded trucks are still stranded on the highway near Makru bridge as the highway is impassable at these sections with water flowing in the middle of the highway as if it is a stream.
A joint team of PWD officials and representatives of the Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) conducted a direct assessment of the highly dilapidated sections at the instruction of PWD Minister Ksh Biren on October 8.The team led by the PWD Chief Engineer found that a 7 Km long section of the highway starting from 1.5 Km to Makru bridge was highly dilapidated.
Engineers of PWD NH Division who also took part in the inspection drive made a rough estimate of the amount of money that would be needed to repair the dilapidated section to a passable state.
TDC president H Ranjit said that a meeting was held in the office chamber of the Works Minister at 11 am today where the PWD Commissioner, the Chief Engineer and TDC representatives including himself were present.
During the meeting, the Works Minister agreed to repair the highly dilapidated highway sections with State fund to a passable state in public interest.
TDC would extend all possible assistance towards repairing the highway and its trucks would be transporting stones for the highway repairing work, Ranjit said.
In the first phase, 100 trucks would be transporting stones for repairing the highway to a motorable level.
In the meantime, BRO has offered to contribute to the highway repairing work with their machinery.
He said that the TDC supports the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation's decision to impose an indefinite bandh along Imphal-Jiribam highway against the authority's failure to repair the highway.
Yet, he appealed to the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation to relax the bandh for trucks transporting stones for the highway repairing work.
