Imphal, February 08 2020:
The Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA), seized liquor worth more than Rs 2 lakh from the hotels located in and around Kangjeibung area, before disposing them at the Excise Department, Lamphelpat today.
Speaking to media persons, CADA secretary general Geetchandra Mangang said that a special team of CADA carried out a drive in the hotels located in the western side of Kangjeibung area and seized a large quantity of liquor.
Questioning the effectiveness of the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act and the logic behind declaring Manipur as a dry State even though liquor is freely available even in the heart of Imphal city, he explained that a civil society like CADA is taking up the responsibility for carrying out such drives against liquor due to the failure of police and the State Government machinery to perform their duties.
Announcing that CADA will continue such drives in the future as well, Geetchandra appealed to the authorities concerned to understand their responsibilities as well and do the needful.
He continued that during the drive today, liquors were seized from eight hotels.
When the drive began, most of the hotels in the area closed down.
But as the police and Excise Dept officials did not want to risk breaking the locks, the closed hotels were left out of the drive, he explained.
