Rehab for sex workers

The Social Welfare Department is currently putting in efforts to bring women sex workers back to mainstream life with the implementation of rehabilitation schemes, said Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai.
The Minister was speaking as chief guest at the district level Widows' Meet of Chandel district held at the community hall of Khangshim village today.
She said that the State is presently dependant on Central Government's fund in taking up welfare programmes of the people due to the weak economic condition of the State.
Mirabai further contended that the Social Welfare Department is committed to equal implementation of these welfare schemes in hill and valley areas.
She also clarified that it was wrong that unequal treatments were being given to hill and valley areas.
Urging the gathering to inform her if they come across any such unequal treatment, the Minister promised that she would take up action against those responsible officials if any.
The meet was organised by District Women Committee and UNM-M Chandel in association with Weaker Sections' Development Council, Centre for Women and Girls, Widows Welfare Society, Rural Women and Child Development Organisation and All Tribal Women Organisation.
DC Th Chittaranjan was the functional president and MLA DK Korungthang was the guest of honour of the function.
Gifts were also presented to around 180 widows in today's function.
