UTP kills self inside Sajiwa jail

A 66-year-old under trial prisoner, who has been accused of raping a minor girl, allegedly committed suicide inside Sajiwa Central jail complex by jumping down from a water reservoir tower today.
According to a reliable source, accused S Ngaopuni s/o (L) Seiha of Liyai Khullen in Senapati district had to appear before the Court of Sessions Court, Manipur East under FIR number 30 (4) 2014 HNG PS U/S 376/420 IPC and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act today.
A couple of hours before his scheduled Court appearance time, he climbed atop a water reservoir tower located in Sector-VII of the jail complex and suddenly jumped down with his head hitting the ground at around 9.30 am, said the source.
Although, the jail authority immediately rushed Ngaopuni to JNIMS hospital, he succumbed to head injuries on the way.
Later, his body was handed over to family members after post mortem examination was conducted in the presence of a Duty Magistrate with full video coverage at JNIMS morgue.
Soon after the incident, Additional DGP rushed to Sajiwa Central jail and inspected the incident site.
It may be mentioned that a rape case is pending against Ngaopuni.
The alleged rape incident happened on April 17 last year on the election day of Lok Sabha of Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency.
On that day, Ngaopuni allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl at an isolated place in Kamei Ching on NH-2 after he took away the girl from her house on the pretext of letting her cast vote in his native village in Senapati district.
Ngaopuni absconded for some days after the alleged rape case came to light.
Soon after the incident, Kanglatongbi locals took out a mass protest and imposed a bandh along NH-2 .
During the people's movement, a youth was killed and two others injured in police firing.
OC of Sekmai police station was put under suspension regarding the death of the youth.
