'Contemporary North East India' seminar at MU

A two-day national seminar on 'Contemporary North East India: Issues, Challenges and Prospects' was opened today at Manipur University.
The seminar is being organised by History Department, Manipur University under the sponsorship of Indian Council of Social Science Research.
Speaking at the inaugural session, MU VC Prof HNK Sharma highlighted the immense responsibility of social scientists in bringing the desired changes in North East India.
Even as adequate funds were sanctioned for development of North East region, the region is lagging behind other Indian States in the fields of education, transport infrastructure, power supply, medical services etc.
In addition, many North Eastern States are plagued by insurgency problems.

Drugs and HIV are another two acute issues facing the region, Prof HNK Sharma stated.
To tackle the myriad issues and challenges confronting the region, social scientists need to take pro-active roles.
Views and concerns of social scientists should be incorporated and reflected in framing State policies and programmes, said the VC.
Coordinator of the seminar Dr H Sudhikumar said that the seminar was being organised to facilitate an academic debate on the issues, challenges and prospects of the North East region.
ICSSR Director Dr KL Khera and Prof Irene Salam of Manipur University, History Department too attended the opening session as guest of honour and president respectively.
The first technical session was chaired by Prof Ksh Bimola during which papers were presented by different resource persons on such topics as State, society, conflict, women etc.
