A two-day workshop on 'Panchayati Raj System in Manipur: Challenges and Solutions' organised by 4-Takyel Development Organi- sation, Takyel Khongbal got underway at Takyel Kolom Leikai community hall today with Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai gracing the inau-guration programme as the chief guest.
Emphasising on holding similar programmes periodically to enhance coordination among the people and the elected representatives at the grassroots level, Minister Mirabai said constant rapport of all stakeholders is inevitable to bring about positive changes in Patsoi assembly constituency, wherein eight Gram Panchayats exist to implement and oversee development programmes.
Pointing out that both the elected members and the general public should be aware about welfare programmes enshrined in the Manipur Panchayati Raj system instituted in the State in 1994, she said lack of understanding on provisions of the Panchayati Raj System often results in misinterpretation of Government policies as well as many welfare projects deprived to the people.
Emphasis on women representatives in local bodies is an acknowledgement of pro-active role of women in the development of the society, said the only lady Minister in the Congress Government reminding that a progressive society would be possible only when the men and women contribute their mite in reforming the society.
Among others, 4-Takyel Zilla Parishad Member A Manimala Devi, Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Director Dr K Shyamsunder Singh, director (ICM) Dr Kh Somorendro Singh and asst Prof (MU) Dr Chinglen Meisnam were also present at the workshop's inauguration programme.
