International Drug Overdose Day observed

Manipur network of Positive People (MNP+) today joined in the global observance of International Drug Overdose Day held at THAU Ground, Thangmeiband on the theme 'Free Access to Naloxone, Save Lives', along with a rally.
Attending the observance as the chief guest, Col (Retd) RK Rajendra pointed out that only through extensive awareness campaigns fatalities related to drug overdose could be prevented.
Stressing that along with awareness campaigns drug abusers should be counselled and convinced to give up dependence on drugs, he also applauded roles played by NGOs in creating awareness on the harmful effects of drugs in the Manipuri society.
Maintaining that past instances of discriminating drug abusers have been reduced to a large extent through awareness campaigns, the chief guest hoped that curing HIV/AIDS infection would be a possibility in the near future.
Taking note of the prevailing situation in the State such as scarcity of essential goods, including life saving drugs, as a consequence of the ongoing blockade of national highways, he desired that transportation of medicines should be exempted from the purview of all forms of agitation.
Speaking at the occasion, SASO general secretary Y Shasikumar rued that lack of awareness and contribution by certain section of the society resulted in fatalities due to overdose which could have been otherwise prevented with timely action.
He made a fervent appealed to every section of the society to contribute their mite in saving precious lives.
Presidents of FDDUO N Moti and MNP+ L Deepak also spoke on related issues at the occasion.
The observance concluded with a rally from THAU ground upto the Social Welfare Department office.
