Imphal, July 31 2016:
A family in Thoubal district has blamed the attending doctor for the death of a newly born infant at Thoubal district hospital.
Speaking to reporters at Manipur Press Club, one Soibam Anita said that her daughter-in-law is a patient of a doctor of the district hospital.
Saying that her daughter-in-law consulted the doctor regularly during her pregnancy, Anita said that although her daughter-in-law's expected date of delivery was July 25, she was rushed to the hospital on July 29 .
After checking the ultrasound result of her daughter, the doctor's wife advised the pregnant woman to get admitted the same day, Anita said.
She further said that although the doctor began to give treatment in the morning of July 29, her daughter-in-law gave birth to a baby boy at around 4.30 pm yesterday.
Saying that she was also present in the labour room when her grandson was born, Anita said that the doctor used a machine to pull out the infant from her mother's womb.
Doctors took the infant to another room as he did not cry after his birth, she said and added that they however heard his cry from the room after around an hour.
It seemed that the infant could not breathe properly when he was handed over to them, Anita said and added that the doctor left the hospital in a hurry without observing the infant's complicacy.
The infant died around five minutes after the doctor left the hospital.
The infant's life could have been saved had the doctor examined him or advised them to take the newly born to another hospital, Anita lamented.
She said that the doctor never picked up their phone after the infant's death.
She said that the proprietor of a diagnostic centre had asked them to settle the matter peacefully.
Anita alleged that the doctor advised all his patients to do all the necessary tests at the diagnostic centre.
She said that her daughter has been discharged from the hospital.
