Imphal, May 31 2022: The Special Court, NIA Manipur today rejected the bail application of Khamliankhup and remanded him to NIA custody for five more days in connection with the ambush laid by militants on November 13 last year where a Commanding officer of Assam Rifles, his wife, minor son and four other personnel were killed apart from inflicting injuries to six other AR personnel .

Khamliankhup (58) s/o (L) Lamchinthang of Jangnuam, Singngat sub-division was produced before the Court by a team of NIA after completion of 10 days police custody remand along with a prayer for remanding him to their custody for five more days.

On the other hand, defence counsel of the alleged accused filed remand objection along with a prayer for releasing Khamliankhup on bail.

IO of the case submitted that during the course of investigation Call Detail Record (CDR) analysis of some of the suspicious mobile phone numbers which were active in and around Behiang area on the date of the incident was done and on the basis of the CDR, some of the mobile users were sorted out and kept on surveillance.

Based on a credible input regarding movement of the mobile phone users, Khamliankhup was taken to NIA Branch Office, Imphal and the alleged accused Khamliankhup revealed that he was in touch with PLA cadres namely Barlin alias Balin and Roben allegedly involved in the ambush on the convoy of the 46 Assam Rifles at Behiang on November 13 last year.

Further it was also revealed that the alleged accused was at Behiang area near the ambush site during the ambush.

Based on his disclosure, Khamliankhup was arrested on May 21 and one small dairy, four mobile phones, one sim card of India and three sim cards of Myanmar were seized from his possession.

During the custodial interrogation, the alleged accused provided valuable evidence in connection with the ambush on the CO's convoy like identification of the other co-accused, the IO submitted and prayed for remanding the alleged accused to police custody for five more days.

On the other hand, the defence counsel of the accused submitted that he is innocent and has been falsely implicated in the case without an iota of evidence against him.

The so-called admission of the accused and his involvement in the alleged offence are fabricated stories.

No material evidence has been collected either from his possession or at his instance, the defence counsel contended and prayed for releasing Khamliankhup on bail.

The Court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing both the parties, remanded the accused to police custody for five more days police till June 4, and rejected the bail application.

The Court also directed NIA to allow family members of the accused and his counsel to meet him while in their custody and also to provide due medical aid to the alleged accused.

Mention may be made that Thangkhuallian, son of the accused is also presently lodged in NIA custody in connection with the same case.
