The presiding officer of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), Ph Surendra Singh has today ordered a number of respondents to pay compensations of varying amounts to the families of four persons who were killed in an accident near Kanglatongbi in February 1996.Case records said that four occupants of the truck including the driver died on the spot after it rammed onto the rear portion of a Mini bus which suddenly braked in front of the truck on February 21 at around 6 pm.
The persons are identified as Krishna Kumar (driver), Paokhogin Thadou (handyman) and two labourers Keijalim Hangshing and Kimi Kipgen.
Later, family members of the victims filed claim cases before the MACT praying for a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the victims.
The listed respondents include the owner of the truck, the National Insurance Company Ltd which insured the truck, the driver and owner of the Mini bus and the New India Insurance Co Ltd which had insured the Mini bus.
The Tribunal asked the respondents one and two to compensate Rs 91,132 inclusive of the interim compensation of Rs 25,000 within 30 days to the parents of the truck driver.
In the case of the death of the handyman, the Tribunal asked to compensate Rs 80,120 by respondents one and two and Rs 45,080 by respondents 3, 4 and 5 within the earlier mentioned period.
