Govt working on environment policy : Biswajit

The State Government is working to enact an environment policy which will remain in effect for five years till 2030 .
This was stated by Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Thongam Biswajit at the release function of Manipur Environment Calendar 2025 .
Speaking at the function held at the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Porompat today, Biswajit informed the gathering that district level environment monitoring cells have been opened in every district.
The State Government is working to enact a State Environment Policy and efforts are on to rejuvenate several springs.
A number of river rejuvenation committees have been set up to rejuvenate polluted rivers.
Imphal River and Kongba River rejuvenation projects have been sanctioned and due preparations have been made to start the project, Biswajit said.
The water of Kongba River is too polluted, smelly and unsafe for human use.
Liquid wastes are being discharged into the river from JNIMS and many other places.
Once the river rejuvenation project is completed, Kongba River can be safe and its water can be used for agricultural and other purposes, he said.
At the initiative of the Chief Minister, the State Government has been working to develop water bodies at different places.
Efforts are underway to conserve local or community ponds, Biswajit claimed.
A project funded by the NEC is underway to clean rivers off plastic bottles and other wastes.
The Government has started cleaning Waithoupat, Yaralpat, Uttrapat as well as Jaimengpat and the authorities have been working to complete these projects by March 2025, Biswajit said.
Installation of plastic bottle collection cages at different places has considerably reduced plastic pollution, he said.
He went on to claim the tree plantation campaign Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam has been going on successfully in the State.
In the backdrop of global warming and climate change, each and every State has been given different assignments and responsibilities.
The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority has been given the responsibility of granting environment clearance.
The Directorate of Environment and Climate Change has been given the responsibility of setting up Manipur State Wetland Authority in order to conserve the wetlands of Manipur, said the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister.
Environment and Climate Change Director T Brajakumar, Joint Directors Arambam Neeta and Ph Vivekananda were also present at the function.
