Imphal, December 29 2020:
Construction of Barak and Makru bridges has been delayed following restrictions imposed by the Government of Meghalaya on movement of heavy vehicles weighing more than 20 tonnes.
According to information received from BIPL which has been constructing Barak and Makru bridges under National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), vehicles carrying 90 metres long girders which are key components of the two bridges were held up at Shillong for more than 20 days after the Government of Meghalaya imposed restriction on movement of vehicles carrying more than 20 tonnes citing poor structural condition of certain bridges and barrages.

Even though the Chief Secretary of Manipur and NHIDCL Managing Director have appealed to the Meghalaya Chief Secretary to allow movement of the stranded vehicles, there has been no response till date, informed the source.
Apart from vehicles carrying girders, vehicles carrying other components and equipment are also stranded.
It is not only Manipur bound vehicles, even vehicles heading to Mizoram are also stranded in Meghalaya.
Nonetheless, NHIDCL has been making necessary arrangements so that the vehicles carrying girders from Nagaon, Assam can take alternative routes to reach Manipur.
As a part of this arrangement, excavators and bulldozers have been sent to Nagaland, said the source.
Installation of 32 metres deck span has been initiated for both the bridges and due preparations have started for installation of girders, added the source.
