Imphal, December 28 2019:
The Manipur Peoples Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (MANPAC) has strongly condemned the detention of its convener at Lamphel PS, apart from decrying the rally which is being organized by BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) .
Speaking to media persons at Lamphel today afternoon, MANPAC convenor Yumnamcha Dilipkumar claimed that yesterday night, he was picked up from his Lamboi-khongnangkhong residence by a team of Imphal West commando and Lamphel police, after taking part in a press conference condemning the BJP rally supporting the CAA.
He said that he was detained the whole night at Lamphel PS before being set free today morning at around 10 am.
Dilipkumar conveyed that he was allegedly picked up by police for holding a talk but instead, he was detained inside the police station the whole night.
This act of the State Government is a violation of the democratic and fundamental rights of citizens.
Such detention violates the rights of freedom of speech in a democratic country, he said claiming that not a single provocative word was uttered by him during the press conference.
In that press conference, he said, he had only appealed to the people to think deeply before participating in the BJP rally.
Dilipkumar further stated that the Government will not able to divert the movement of the people by arresting CSO leaders and others for expressing their point of views.
On the other hand, L Jadumani, co-convener of MANPAC stated that MANPAC welcomes the Union Government for exempting Manipur from CAA by implementing the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS).
But even to this day, MANPAC's stand against CAA remains the same, he said, adding that the detention of the MANPAC convener is an insult to democracy.
