Imphal, September 28 2012:
Under the aegis of Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR), a one day State Level Consultation on Right to Education (RTE) was held at the conference hall of Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC), Palace Compound here today.
Organised with the objective of finding out various existing gaps and measures to bring about a speedy implementation of RTE Act in the state through collective understanding, co-operation, commitment and strong community participation, the consultation workshop stressed on need to check proper implementation of RTE in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, K Pradipkumar, Convener of MACR, explained that there are certain guidelines to be followed under RTE.
There is the need to examine whether these guidelines are being followed in the state or not.
There is also the requirement to understand who is monitoring implementation of RTE in the state.
Even though there is strict prohibition on screening students while enrolling them in schools under RTE, yet there are certain private schools which still carry out the screening process unabated, he pointed out.
Though the RTE Act has been implemented in the state since 2010, yet there have been no solid changes in the field of education so far.
School Management Committees have been formed and the committees have to perform their duties to the maximum, he added.
A Thoithoi, General Secetary, DESAM, who was also present on the occasion, said that though the state provides free books and uniforms and imparts free education to the students, the parents are reluctant to send their children to government schools.
The main reason behind the reluctance of the parents is probably due to lack of sincerity on the part of some of the teachers.
The consultation function was also attended by K Kapai, ZEO Ukhrul; Kananbala, DI, Imphal East; Th Jadumani, DI, Zone II and W Brojendro, ZEO, Zone II .
