Imphal, November 26 2020:
The repairing of Irang bridge on Imphal- Jiribam road is likely to be completed tomorrow, engineers of Indian Army told Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union.
Maibam Anil, general secretary of the union who is overseeing the repairing work said the Indian army engineers are expecting to complete the reconstruction of the bailey bridge tomorrow.
If works are completed tomorrow as expected, the bridge will become operational from the next day, he said.
It may be noted that the bailey bridge had collapsed on November 1 bringing down a sand carrying truck with it.
While one handyman was rescued, the driver identified as Khamba was found dead days later in the Irang river kilometres away from the incident site.
The bridge is being installed by the Indian army taking parts from a bailey bridge at Tengnoupal district.
Midway assembling the bridge, it had collapsed recently and the army had to assemble the parts again from scratch.
Even if the bridge is completed tomorrow, the bad condition of the road nearby may hinder the movement of vehicles.
The NHIDCL should start works to make the road motorable, else resuming vehicular movement is unlikely, Anil added.
