Imphal, March 26 2018: Joupi is located in Chandel district, Manipur.

The terrain is mountainous and inhospitable with incessant rainfalls.

The virgin mountains have fertile soil with number of streams and river flowing through them.

Local community for years have depended on poppy cultivation as their main source of income due to limited avenues for income generations and lack of basic infrastructure.

Joupi Battalion of 28 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) have taken an initiative to provide viable alternate livelihood source to the local community involved in illegal poppy cultivation.

Joupi Battalion, resolutely over a period of time have been motivating the people to forsake the cultivation of banned narcotic and embrace cultivating lemon grass.

Through frequent interactions with the villagers and spreading the awareness on lemon grass cultivation and it's social and economic benefits the populace have become willing to adopt the cultivation of the aromatic plant.

A sensitization programme was organised by Joupi Battalion on 25 Mar 2018 at Joupi which was conducted by Dr.R Sanga, pioneer in lemon grass cultivation in Manipur who owns Thangching Enterprises.

He is a renowned personality in realms of Araomatic and medicinal plant cultivation.

The seminar was attended by 200 villagers from villages around Jhoupi.
