Nupi Shumang Leela competition kicks off

The inaugural programme of 'Nupi Shumang Leela Competition' on the theme Women in Freedom Struggle was held today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Sanglen, Palace Compound.
The competition will continue till December 2 .
The competition organised by the Department of Art and Culture as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav was attended by M Joy, commissioner Art and Culture; Ng Uttam, director, Art and Culture and Ph Gunachandra, lifetime president, Manipur State Shumang Leela Council as presidium members.
Speaking at the inaugural function, M Joy said women shumang leela groups need to work towards ensuring that people are enthusiastic and genuinely interested in watching their play.
The public are more interested in watching shumang leela play by male artists and have very less interest towards women shumang leela, he added.
He also deliberated on the need for shumang leela to play an important role in imparting knowledge about Manipuri language to the younger generations.
Ng Uttam in his presidential speech said the competition was organised to motivate women shumang leela groups and for Nupi Lal remembrance day.
The prizes for the competition are Rs 1 lac, Rs 75,000/- and Rs 50,000/- as first, second and third prizes respectively and it will be distributed on Nupi Lal celebration on December 12.Stating that the traditional values of shumang leela are losing with time, Ph Gunachandra deliberated on the need to discuss and come up with ways and means to preserve the characteristics of shumang leela.
'Nupi Lal gi Ahanba Meiri' played by Malom Panthoibi Artist Association was played during the inaugural programme today.
'Pendraba Khunai gi Meirida' by the Western Cultural Association will be shown on November 26; 'Mei gi Ching' by the Yangam Leirak Nupi Leela Association on November 27; 'British ki Mayokta Nupi Lal 1904' by Malom Tulihan Awang Leikai Nupi Chaokhat Thourang Lup on November 28; 'Gaidinliu' by the Meitei Leimarol Art Performing Centre on November 29; 'British ki Mayokta Nupisingi Thoudang' by Women for Cultural Centre on November 30; 'Nupi Lal' by Women's Art & Culture Association on December 1 and 'Amamba Amasung Anganba Manipur' by Kangjabi Meitei Chanu Artist cum Drama Association on December 2 .
